No surprise then that the national flag of Japan is the SUN.
It is written that since the Heian period or earlier, (794-1184) the word "Kimi' has been used either as a noun to indicate an emperor or one's lord (i.e. master) as an honorific noun or suffix to indicate a person.
On the 29th of June, 1999, the Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi confirmed that 'Kimi' indicates a person who is a symbol of the state and of the unity of the people. Their position is based upon the consensus will of the people with whom sovereign power resides. The lyric of the anthem is the wish of the people for lasting prosperity and peace.
The original poem began with 'Waga Kimi wa' and it means 'You, my lord' and this was replaced by 'Kimiga Yo Wa' and it means your reign.
